On 3 April the Flemish Parliament unanimously approved the decree proposal that forbids the use of fireworks, crackers, carbide cannons and sky lanterns unless a municipal or city government has given express permission for their use. GAIA approves of this measure, but it would have been even better if the council had attached a further obligation to use low-noise fireworks when granting permission for their use.
GAIA has been campaigning for a ban on fireworks, or at least for the use of low-noise fireworks, for years. We have booked some results: more local authorities are restricting or banning the use of fireworks, or are switching to low-noise fireworks. This regional ban, which goes further than a ban by a few local authorities, is absolutely a step in the right direction.
